Troy Lee Designs Top Ten in San Diego Chiller

AMA Supercross - San Diego, CA

It’s strange that a city known for its temperate climate would be the one stop on the Supercross tour that is known for bringing inclement weather. The 2013 running of the San Diego supercross brought biting cold weather and some not-so-hot luck for the TLD race team.

After all three riders posted quick qualifying times the crew was optimistic about their chances when the gate dropped. But it didn’t take long for things to go sideways... Literally. In the first heat Cole Seely, who many were looking to for a breakout win, tangled with a downed rider in front of him. With nowhere to go, Seely ran into him and had a tough time getting going again. He would make an effort to move back into qualifying position but time ran out and he was sent to the LCQ.

Heat two saw Christian Craig jump to an early lead and settle into third in a great ride. However, Jessy Nelson would get up close and personal with the San Diego soil. A pile up in the first turn would prevent him from earning a spot in the main. Fortunately both Seely and Nelson got clean starts in the LCQ and finished 1-2, securing the last two spots on the grid.

Gate position for Seely and Nelson was not ideal in the main and their starts reflected it. To add insult to injury both Seely and Craig would crash early in the final and begin working their way forward from way back in the pack. Nelson struggled to make passes on the narrow course but managed to get to tenth as the checkers dropped. Craig and Seely would finish 13th and 15th, collectively, not what they were hoping to end the night with.

The good news is that all three riders are healthy and looking to change things up for a few weeks as outdoor testing begins. Seely and Craig will be stepping up to the 450 class while Jessy Nelson gets prepped for his sophomore season in professional motocross racing. Look for the TLD crew to be back in action at the Seattle supercross in six weeks time.
