Fillmore 7th at AMA Pro Superbike Final at Laguna Seca

AMA Pro Superbike - Monterey, CA

KTM/HMC Factory rider Taylor Knapp had his season best finish at the final round of the AMA Pro Superbike series finishing 6th overall at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. His teammate, Chris Fillmore, was on his way to his first podium finish before running out of fuel on the final straight. Fillmore pushed his bike across the line to a 7th place overall finish.

Chris Fillmore and Taylor Knapp had two of their best qualifying times this season with Fillmore 3rd and Knapp in 7th overall during Saturday qualifying.

“This is a great track for our bike and we were able to make some gains on the suspension and handling before returning to Laguna,” stated Fillmore. “It was proven to be a successful change by putting in qualifying laps almost a second faster than we were a few months ago here.”

Fillmore had a great start aboard his KTM 1190 RC8 R, rounding the first lap in 4th place. He continued to move forward and was able to capitalize on a mistake made by Anthony Cardenas to takeover 3rd position, with Larry Pegram in tow. Fillmore and Pegram never had more than a .4-second gap between them until lap 10, when Pegram passed Fillmore sending him back to 4th. By the halfway point Fillmore hadn’t lost any ground to Pegram and was looking for his opportunity to take back the final podium position. On the last lap, Fillmore and Pegram had a back and forth battle passing each other multiple times between corners and straights. Fillmore was able to make an impressive pass at turn six to gain a bike length on Pegram; ready to claim his first-ever AMA Superbike podium. Unfortunately, Fillmore’s bike ran out of fuel exiting the last corner causing his bike to come to a stop on the final straight. With the checker flag in sight and cheers from the stands, Fillmore began to run alongside his bike, pushing his machine across the finish line to take home an admirable 7th place overall and 7th in the series.

“We topped off with fuel out on the grid after the sight lap and we knew it was going to be close,” mentioned Fillmore. “It was great racing that hard with Pegram. I wish I could have finished the race on the podium, but I truly gave it everything I had today.”

For Knapp, his start had him running in 8th place at the beginning of the race. He was able to get around the carnage of the Cardenas crash to gain a position. Knapp settled into 7th and began to set his sights on the 6th place rider of Chris Clark. With 16 laps to go, Knapp was able to get around Clark and takeover 6th position. The two riders battled for the next two laps until Knapp made a small mistake causing him to move back to 7th. Knapp continued to ride a solid race in 7th, until the final straight where he rode past his teammate to acquire 6th place and his season best finish. Knapp completed the season just outside the top ten in points, finishing 11th overall in the series.
