Troy Lee Designs Digs Deep in Southwick Sand

AMA Motocross - Southwick, MA

Every year there is one motocross national venue that stands out among the twelve round series. The racing surface is unique, the weather is tumultuous and sand specialists from the area shine for one afternoon. The location is Southwick, Massachusetts and the track is MX-338, round eight of the Lucas Oil/ Red Bull national motocross series. Last Saturday the Troy Lee Designs cadets dug into their bunkers in the deep sands of “The ‘Wick” and fought bravely for points in the winding down hours of the series.

The TLD 250 riders had a great showing with Nelson and Baker finishing 8th and 9th respectively. Jessy Nelson had the best moto of his young career at the start of the day. He came around on lap one in seventh position and moved his way into fifth. He would hold onto it and log his first top-five finish. The second moto he looked like he was going to improve upon that by pulling the holeshot and leading for a lap! He dropped to third and stayed there until the deep Southwick sand whoops started to take their toll on the rookie. He would eventually slide back to eleventh for eighth overall on the day.

Travis Baker had another consistent weekend where he started inside the top fifteen both motos and worked his way to tenth in both motos. He was credited with ninth overall on the weekend.

Christian Craig got caught up in a first-turn pileup in the first 450 moto relegating him to the back of the field. He charged up to fifteenth in moto one, posting a decent result for his effort. The second moto Craig started in third and was looking good. He clearly had the speed to be at the front of the pack, unfortunately he made some mistakes and would slip back to fifteenth once again at the end of the moto and fifteenth overall on the day.

Tarah Gieger, who has been in contention for the WMX title, had a difficult day. The first moto she overcame an average start to finish third, earning good points in the process. The second moto she tangled with another rider on the start and narrowly avoided going down. She once again found a way to climb to the third position but a late-race fall would send her back to fifth. Her 3-5 moto finishes would put her fourth overall on the day and spread the points out in the title hunt.

The team now heads to the historic motocross grounds known as Unadilla for round nine next weekend. Come check out one of the legendary tracks on the pro tour and watch the Troy Lee Designs riders fight for position with the best in the world.
