Fillmore and Nebel Place Top Ten at Road America
AMA Superbike - Elkhart Lake, WI
KTM/HMC Factory Superbike Team riders Chris Fillmore and Stefan Nebel had a great weekend at the fifth round of the AMA Pro SuperBike Series held at Road America. Fillmore finished the weekend with a pair of 9th place finishes while Nebel earned his best finish of the season with a 10th place on Saturday and an 11th place result on Sunday.
Rainfall during Saturday’s race delayed the start of the SuperBike main but did allow for an extra 15 minute practice session prior to going out. “The track was wet during our practice session,” remarked Nebel. “Because of the conditions we had a certain tire on at the beginning of the warm-up and then as the track dried before our main we had to switch to another tire right before the start.”
The multiple tire changes and changing track conditions made it hard for riders to get comfortable on the Road America course. Nevertheless, the race started and both KTM/HMC riders got off to a good start. The two teammates stayed together throughout the entire race and fed off of each other’s momentum to click off fast laps. At the end of the race both riders were able to finish inside the top ten with Fillmore finishing 9th and Nebel coming in right behind him in 10th.
“It was fun to ride with my teammate today,” remarked Fillmore. “We were able to push each other to the finish and we were both happy we were able to put our KTM/HMC machines in the top ten today.”
The weather was dramatically different for Sunday’s race. Sunday’s race day was full of sun and perfect temperatures. Both riders started around mid pack at the beginning of the race and remained close together for the first few laps. Unfortunately, clutch problems plagued both riders midway throughout the race and both Fillmore and Nebel focused on riding a mistake-free race to pocket a decent finish. Fillmore was able to hold on to 9th to match his finish from the day before while Nebel dropped to 11th after losing one position on the final lap.
“I am bummed about falling outside of the top ten,” remarked Nebel. “I am still happy that Chris (Fillmore) and I were able to finish inside the top ten on Saturday but it would have been nice to duplicate that today. I am very happy to see the progress our team is making in its first year and it is wonderful to hear all the positive feedback from the fans that attend each race. We feel that we have a lot of support from the AMA SuperBike fans and it is greatly appreciated.”
